“We aren't suffering in the same way as the person who is depressed, that much is a given. But, in trying to support someone we love as he or she tries to get better, we can still be profoundly affected.”
This recently published article from Vice UK does a fantastic job of describing some of the challenges of trying to help a loved one who is suffering from depression. Many of us have not suffered from a mental illness ourselves but have been profoundly impacted by the struggles of someone we love and care about. It can be difficult to share these feelings, but it is important for the partners, family and friends of those struggling with depression or another mental illness to have someone to talk to as well, and to feel like they’re not alone. It is important to keep in mind that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and that simply being present and communicating with your loved one can make a world of difference.
